Issue Brief: Impact of Encampment Sweeps on People Experiencing Homelessness

Encampments can be unsafe, violent, and unhealthy places, and public health officials are rightly concerned about the impact of these congregate settings on vulnerable people. In fact, public health concerns are often used to justify sweeps, especially due to lack of access to running water and bathrooms. However, encampment sweeps are counterproductive, costly, and harmful.
