This workshop will discuss the issue of childhood lead poisoning, particularly as it relates to homeless families, program successes and challenges, and how the program can be implemented nationwide. Homeless children are at a particularly high risk for lead poisoning. A recent study shows homeless children in Philadelphia suffer from twice the rate of lead poisoning as the general population of children. Childhood lead poisoning is associated with learning disabilities, behavior problems, brain damage, and a host of other permanent health consequences. The Lead Safe Babies—Families in Transition program (LSB-FiT) of the National Nursing Centers Consortium is designed to provide education on effective techniques for homeless mothers and caregivers to keep their children safe from lead poisoning.
