Tuberculosis is predominantly a disease of poverty and crowding. Homeless shelters, where individuals live cheek by jowl, often for months on end, have been described as the equivalent of nineteenth century tenements. Their residents can be unwitting vectors of air- borne pathogens such as Myobacterium tuberculosis.
