Trauma — physical, sexual and emotional — is both a cause and a consequence of homelessness. Numerous studies conducted dur- ing the past decade identify domestic violence as a primary cause of homelessness in the United States, particularly for women and chil- dren, who now comprise approximately 40% of the homeless popula- tion. Between 22% and 50% of homeless women surveyed said they left their last residence to escape domestic violence. The prevalence of severe interpersonal violence is significantly higher for women and children in families with incomes below the poverty level, and higher still for homeless women.
