A great irony of human ecology is that whether homeless or not, people are themselves home to legions of microbe families which flourish at their hosts’ expense. Among the more insidious of these uninvited guests is the hepatitis C virus (HCV), first identified as a distinct, blood borne pathogen in 1988. HCV can lie dormant for decades before awakening to wreak havoc through cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma. No vaccine is yet available to prevent hepatitis C.
