Prevent Client Evictions!

(Updated April 21, 2021, to reflect the new expiration date for the eviction moratorium, June 30, 2021.)

The CDC has released an order halting most evictions due to nonpayment of rent during the COVID-19 pandemic. The order is in effect from September 4, 2020, through June 30, 2021. However, renters are not automatically covered; they need to complete a signed declaration and present it to their landlord.

Case managers and other front line staff must take action immediately to help clients prevent evictions!

To prevent eviction, renters need to immediately provide a signed declaration to their landlords. Case managers and other staff should help clients understand this process and, if possible, complete forms on their behalf. There is no deadline for submission, but it must be filled out for clients to be protected from evictions. 

The declaration comes in multiple languages:  Arabic | Bangla | Burmese | Simplified Chinese | Traditional Chinese | Chuukese | Creole | English | Hmong | Khmer | Korean | Lao | Marshallese | Mongolian | Napali | Punjabi (Gurmukhī) | Russian | Somali | Samoan | Spanish CDC| Tagalog | Thai | Tongan | Urdu | Vietnamese

You should also know:

• The order does NOT replace or override stronger state or local eviction protections.
• The order does NOT stop the rent from being owed, or stop fines or penalties from being added. All rent will still be due after the order expires on June 30, 2020.
• The order does NOT prevent evictions for reasons other than nonpayment, including criminal activity, damaging property, and more.

What’s next?

This order is a Band-Aid to postpone evictions for some people and is not enough to prevent financial instability and future evictions. We need support from Congress and the White House, including at least $100 billion in emergency rental assistance.
