Detroit Healthcare for the Homeless dba Advantage Health Centers
Detroit Health Care for the Homeless, Inc. incorporated in 1986 to improve the health of Detroit’s most vulnerable population. In 2003, DHCH expanded its mission to include all of those who are uninsured, or who live in areas where there are not enough doctors available. Since then, DHCH has done business as Advantage Health Centers and now operates a network of medical and dental clinics.
Services
Direct services include prevention, medical, nursing, social work, and pharmacy. Mental health and substance abuse services are provided on-site by New Center Mental Health Services (NCMHS) staff in addition to referrals to community agencies and treatment facilities. 24 hour emergency on-call, Asthma treatment, Basic Needs, Behavioral/Mental Health Care Services, Blood Pressure Monitoring, Cancer Screening, Case Management/Social Services, Child Development Services, Chronic Bronchitis/Emphysema, Contraceptives (issued w/counseling), Dental/oral Care, Diabetes Testing/Care, Documenting Disability Services, Flu Vaccinations, HIV/AIDS screening/education, Immunizations, Interpretation services, Labs, Medication Prescribing, Medication Dispensing, Mental Health Counseling, OB/GYN, Outreach, Pediatrics, Pharmacy, Physical Exams, Primary Health Care, Referrals for Specialty Care, Shelter outreach, STD Testing, TB screening/education, Tobacco cessation, Well Child Check-ups.
Linkages
Subspecialty, hospital, emergency, laboratory, and radiology services are provided by community resources. Social service problems are addressed by clinic social/outreach workers and a network of referrals in the community. Substance abuse treatment is available to individuals with alcohol/drug abuse problems who are homeless through community agreements and the Detroit Health Department Bureau of Substance Abuse. Psychiatric treatment is available through an agreement with New Center Mental Health Services. DHCH as well as linkages with other Detroit- Wayne County Mental Health Community Health contracted agencies. Detroit Health Department John-Providence hospitals provide specialty referral services and hospitalization.
