Council Statement on 2024 Election Results

The results of the 2024 election only reaffirm our collective commitment to the mission that has guided us for decades: Ensuring that every person—especially those experiencing homelessness—has access to the health care they need to live with dignity and security. Regardless of the political landscape, our work remains steadfast and urgent.

The election results may shift the political landscape, but they will not alter our unwavering commitment to advocating for the health, well-being, and human rights of people experiencing homelessness. A Trump administration promises to exacerbate the challenges we face, with potential rollbacks of critical healthcare protections and an increased focus on punitive measures rather than compassionate solutions for homelessness. Policies that undermine access to affordable health care, threaten Medicaid, and target vulnerable populations could deepen disparities and harm the most marginalized. Similarly, a continued focus on criminalizing homelessness rather than addressing its root causes would further entrench the cycle of poverty and instability.

In the face of these threats, we remain resolute in our core purpose: To fight for equitable, systemic reforms that ensure health care is a fundamental right and homelessness is not a permanent condition, but a crisis that can, and must, be resolved through compassionate and proactive solutions. As we move forward in this new chapter, our work must be collaborative. The solutions to homelessness and healthcare disparities require collective action and the strength of diverse voices and perspectives. Together, we have the power to amplify our impact and advocate more effectively for change. We must continue to collaborate, share resources, and support each other in the critical work ahead.

As we navigate the results of this election, NHCHC commits to the following:

Strengthening Our Partnerships: Whether at the national, state, or local level, we will work closely with other organizations, policymakers, and community leaders to build a unified voice for health care and homelessness reform. The challenges we face are complex, but together, we can create equitable and lasting solutions that integrate health care, housing, and supportive services.

Elevating Lived Experience: We will continue to center the voices of those with lived experience in every aspect of our work. Their insights are invaluable, and by working together, we can ensure that solutions are not just effective but rooted in compassion and understanding. We must create spaces for these voices to lead the way, shaping the policies and programs that directly impact their lives.

Sharing Knowledge and Resources: Collaboration means learning from one another and lifting each other up. We will continue to share knowledge, tools, and best practices across our network, helping all members have the resources they need to effectively advocate for and support people experiencing homelessness.

Collective Advocacy and Accountability: We will strengthen our advocacy efforts by uniting our voices across the nation. We are more powerful when we advocate together, and we will hold policymakers accountable for making real, tangible investments in solutions that address the root causes of homelessness and improve access to health care.

Now, more than ever, we must act with urgency, compassion, and solidarity. By working together, we can push forward the changes needed to ensure that every person experiencing homelessness has access to the equitable care, services, and support they deserve.

Thank you for your ongoing dedication and leadership. Together, we will continue to build a future where health care is a right, homelessness is rare and brief, and the most vulnerable among us have the resources and support to thrive.
