CMS approved Washington’s ‘Medicaid Transformation Project 2.0’ 1115 waiver to CMS in June 2023, adding recuperative care as a housing support under HRSN services. Medical Respite Care, grouped within the housing and transitional care portion of the 1115 waiver, is defined short-term post-hospitalization residential care and housing to support members in health and recovery from an injury or illness (including behavioral health conditions) and whose conditions does not require hospitalization but would be exacerbated by an unstable living environment.
Note: Washington is one of a handful of state in which a behavioral health condition does not need to be accompanied by a physical medical condition to receive recuperative care services for qualified individuals. Also, reimbursement for medical respite/recuperative care will be available to providers beginning July 1, 2025.
