Minnesota Status of Statewide Medicaid Benefits for Medical Respite / Recuperative Care

Starting January 1, 2024, Minnesota used a state plan amendment to add Recuperative Care to its Medicaid program for adults who are experiencing homelessness or are otherwise unhoused, and have a referral from a clinic or hospital.

Medicaid members must be 19 years or older, currently experiencing homelessness or otherwise unhoused, and in need of short-term medical care for fewer than 60 days. Managed Care Plans can authorize 21 days of recuperative care for each patient, and the individual is eligible for an extension of recuperative care services so long as they meet the need for extended clinical supports and their total stay does not exceed 60 days.
