Register Now: Health Literacy in Medical Respite Care on Oct. 23rd

Health literacy is defined as an individual’s ability to find, understand, and use health-related information and services in making health-related decisions and putting the information into practice. Persons experiencing homelessness are at a greater risk for poor health literacy, severely affecting disease burden, risk for hospitalizations, health complications, and effectiveness of health management. However, medical respite provides a clear cut opportunity to address health literacy barriers and skills and improve health outcomes for clients.

This webinar, presented by staff from Central Health in Austin, TX, will provide an overview of how providers can assess health literacy barriers that are potentially harmful to patients, while also discussing solutions to address these barriers. Methods presented will include health literacy screenings, refining the medical respite admission process, and creating a more intentional environment for staff to consider health literacy barriers in everyday interactions and education. With improved awareness of all the challenges that exist for our patients, we can collectively develop creative strategies to individualize patient care and address these barriers to health literacy in this medically and socially complex population.
